Back in October, my husband and I applied with Search Associates, a sort-of employment agency/head hunter for English-speaking international schools. We have talked about doing this several times over the years, but when my school's band teacher and his family took the plunge and went to Seoul, we started talking more seriously about the possibility of teaching internationally.
We applied with about 20 international schools, all of which had either librarian or English teacher positions for me AND either math or computer teacher for my husband.
Just before Thanksgiving, I interviewed with Dulwich College, a British international school in Suzhou, China. After two Skype interviews, I was offered the senior school librarian position, which I very happily accepted! I will also be the head librarian for the school. Because they don't currently have a math or computer teacher position for my husband, he plans to supply teach (a.k.a., substitute teach) for the school and work on his Master's Degree in IT until a position opens up for him. We can easily live on my salary there since the school will pay our housing expenses in China.
The benefits of teaching abroad are immense. We will no longer have to pay for mortgage, HOA, car, gasoline, or car insurance. Our health insurance carries no monthly premium, and we will have no insurance deductible to pay before our 20% copayment kicks in. Best of all, my two boys will benefit from a FREE IB education and the opportunity to see the world!

To say that we are excited would be an understatement. Yes, it is a little scary to think about leaving Texas, where we have lived since 1996. I've only left the country once in my life, and that was for a Cancun vacation in 1996. My boys, ages 6 and 9, took some time to warm up to the idea of moving overseas, but once they got used to it, they are really excited also. We have been attempting to learn Chinese (quite hilarious--we are terrible at it!) and trying to decide what to take and what to sell/give away before we leave in July. This is a huge step, but we absolutely cannot wait!
As far as the blog goes, I plan to continue it as normal from China. I'll still review YA and MG books; I'll still share my lessons and ideas with the library community. I have also added a Librarian in China tab at the top as a place to share my experiences with anyone who is interested!
